This week's Creative Mother is Colleen of Kisco Print Shop. I love how having less time has actually made her more productive, and helps her to not over edit her work. Thanks Colleen for sharing!
Describe your art and creative process.
Patterns, nature and architecture really evoke how my next piece of art will take shape - whether it's in the design, color scheme, blending or even how I will crop an image.
What's a positive way that your creativity has changed since you became a parent?
Since I've had my little girl, it has really made my creative process more efficient - because I have less time to think over a design. I just have to start the process and tweak it as I see it take shape. Instead of editing it in my mind, I'm actually doing it in real time.
When are you most productive & what helps keep you creating?
Definitely not the morning! The pull of my right brain keeps me creating - usually its the strongest in late afternoon or early evening! I am always wanting to change the decor in my house, so I create exactly what I want through art and then if it's a good fit in my house and others seem to like it, then I add it to Kisco's offerings online.
What inspires your work the most?
The desire for change and new perspective. My tastes change from year to year, so I create art not only for my space for others who want to try something new and creative.
Parents have challenges and other schedules to think about. What are some ways you make sure you give your art the time it needs?
As i mentioned before, I think it's the schedule that helps me to be more productive. If I had all day, every day to create art, I would probably only have one or two pieces completed because I would constantly edit them!
Name a creative mother or father who inspires you and why. Please provide links if you can.
There are too many! I get my creativity from my mom - she has always supported and encouraged my creative side (you too, Dad!) My sister also has a creative edge and is actually writes a blog called "Prayer Lab" and my husband is an amazing furniture designer and contractor when he's not working in the corporate world. Can I add just one more?! Studio McGee - the husband/wife, father/mother who create amazing interiors www.studio-mcgee.com
I'm no longer doing Creative Mothers interview, but this will remain as an archive. Thank you for all of the love!
About the Series
Let's face it, being a mother can be the most challenging, and the most rewarding thing. Being a mother who needs to be creative can be even more challenging, it can even feel lonely at times.
So let's dig deeper into the lives of creative mothers, share their amazing work, and get some insight into creating while parenting. Hopefully, inspiring other artistic, creative mothers, and women who may one day be mothers themselves, along the way.
